Buyers Guide to Bread Makers

Whether you are a first time buyer or have owned a bread maker before, we have created a simple guide to help you decide on what features and settings you should consider before investing into a bread maker.

Size

One of the first thing you should consider is what size bread you want to bake, the standard size is usually 2 pound loaves but they can range from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3 pound loaves.
There are quite a number of bread makers available now which allows you to choose from 2-3 different size loaves.

Automatic

An automatic bread maker basically means it comes pre-programmed with a series of baking options which allows you to make different types of breads, doughs, cake batters and jams.

Programmable

When we talk about programmable bread makers, in addition to the Automatic Baking Options, some bread makers allow you to customized and program your bread maker to your own recipes. Which allows you to customize the different stages from the mixing, kneading, proofing and baking stages. Often this can cause confusion as some machines say they are programmable but really they are not.

What you want to make?

As standard most bread makers will make white, whole wheat, rapid and sweet types of bread. Some bread machines have specific baking options for gluten free and low carbs breads. Another baking options which is becoming popular, is the ability to use it to make artisian doughs, pizza doughs, pasta, cake batter and jams.

Delay Timer

A delay timer is pretty much standard these days, it allows you to delay the time on when the bread maker will start. Which is great for people who wants to have fresh baked bread in the morning or when you get back from work. Usually it is between 13-15 hours. We have seen some machine which can delay upto 24 hours.

Crust Color

A another common features is most bread makers allows you choose from 2-3 different crust colors for you bread which are light, medium or dark.

Fruit & Nut Dispenser

If you intend to make fruit & nut types breads, you should check whether the bread maker will dispense the fruit & nut automatically or whether it is a manual step. There are some machines that have an compartment that stores the fruit and nut and will automatically dispense it at the appropriate time. Where as others have a timer bell which signals when to add it. And then there are the rest which you have to continually monitor it of when you have to add the fruit & nut.
